Interview Questions 8

June 5, 2017

What is your favorite movie quote?

“I don’t want to kill anyone. I don’t like bullies; I don’t care where they’re from.”
Steve Rogers, Captain America: The First Avenger

This was the most powerful line of the movie for me. It also made me fall in love with the character of Captain America and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. The line is in response to Steve being asked whether he wants to kill Nazis. A lot of soldiers probably entered World War II hoping to destroy evil. This line sets up Captain America not as a weapon but as a shield. He cares more about protecting the innocent than destroying evil. As a child of the eighties, I grew up hearing epic stories of World War II. I was one generation removed so there was definitely a more romantic sheen on every story I heard. While war is not ideal, evil prevails when good men do nothing. The Nazis were the ultimate bullies and the world rose up to stop them. It was the last time we had a clear conscience in a fight like that. I still get chills when Chris Evans delivers that line with such passion.

Would you rather spend five days exploring Disney or New York City?

I would take five days to explore Disney World or Disney Land. I am lucky to have been to both New York City and Disney World. I have not been to Disney World for a long time but I have been to NYC off and on for decades. I have enjoyed both places a lot at different times. However, New York City is a real place. It has real dangers and real downsides. Disney World and Disney Land are fascinating as they are wholly manufactured worlds. Every inch of the parks are built for my pleasure and there are a million surprises waiting for me. I would never run out of things to examine and re-examine if I lived there forever but definitely not in five days. New York City is interesting but there is just more of a chance of me searching for treasure and getting disappointment instead. If I am dedicating five whole days, I pick a Disney park hands down. Of course, if we are talking about the fictional Disney multiverse, then I also chose that because that would be amazing (and probably dangerous but whatever).

Would you rather be the most popular kid in school or the smartest kid in school?

I have never been the popular kid. To a certain extent, I have always been part of the nerd and geek subculture which was never at the top of the food chain while I was a kid. I was also never the smartest kid but I was always on the smarter end of the student body spectrum. School just came easily to me. I worked hard but I usually understood things pretty quickly. I enjoyed being smart. Being smart makes homework easier, which left me more time for video games and other extracurriculars. Being smart also makes lectures a little more fascinating and learning a lot more fun. Schoolwork is almost never too frustrating when you are smart enough. However, being the smartest brings the pressure to excel to higher heights but I would be secure that I was qualified to do whatever I wanted. While I pursued being popular as a kid, I was kind of glad that I never really succeeded. Socially, I am more comfortable in smaller crowds. I would hate to have too many people clambering to hang out with me. I like having my solitude when I want it. I would prefer the life of the mind while I maintain my small circle of trusted friends.

The Gravity

When Kelsie walked into the locker room, there was already a lot of shouting. It was not the good, after-game excitement shouting. It was angry shouting. Ruby and Nikki were going at it and it looked like they were about to start shoving each other. Kelsie could not tell what the fight was about but she knew it was up to her to end it. She stepped between the warring factions.

“Hey!” She yelled. “You two need to quit it and cool down. Can you do that for me, please?”

“I was just trying to change and get out of here,” Ruby said. “but she picked a fight with me.”

“You little snitch!” Nikki yelled.

“Whoa,” Kelsie said. “How about you tell me what’s wrong, Nikki? We solve problems together on this team.”

Nikki sighed and backed off of Ruby but she was pacing a little. “If Ruby had passed me the ball in that last quarter, we would have won. Instead, she passed to her girl Bailey and Bailey blew it.”

Kelsie glanced over to see Bailey blush and look down. Kelsie walked over and put a hand on Bailey’s shoulder. “Bailey did not blow it. She tried her best. I bet she gets the next one.”

“Yeah, I will,” Bailey said with a smile that warmed slowly and showed her confidence returning.

“And she’s not just Ruby’s girl,” Kelsie said. “She’s our teammate and so is Ruby and so are you, Nikki. Maybe Ruby didn’t see what you saw. We’ll get better at that through practice. We can only get better together, right?” She looked at Nikki purposefully. It was not a hard look or an unfriendly look but it was an unshakably confident look. Nikki looked down, breaking first and looking ashamed.

“Yes, Captain Kelsie,” Nikki said softly.

“I can’t hear you!” Kelsie yelled with a smile. This was directed at the whole room rather than just picking on Nikki.

“Yes, Captain Kelsie!” The girls in the locker room shouted and that included Nikki.

Kelsie beamed with pride. “Besides, what would our coach do if she saw this? I’ll tell you what she would do. She would make all of us do laps and we already just played a hard game. I don’t want to do laps, do you?”

“Okay Okay,” Nikki said with a groan. “We get it. I won’t fight anymore. I’ll play nice. I’m sorry.”

“Awesome,” Kelsie said. She held out her fist and Nikki touched her fist to it. Nikki sighed and turned to Ruby and held out her fist. The two of them touched fists together. Kelsie liked that but decided not to ruin the moment by pointing it all out. She loved the lacrosse team.

One by one, the team filtered out of the locker room. Kelsie stayed behind to tidy up a bit. Nobody on the team would dare be messy in the locker room but there were a few things to tuck away so the janitor could get everywhere with the mop. After tidying, Kelsie decided to take a shower. The loss of the game was hitting her again and it was hard to remain positive.

As the water ran over her and she breathed in the steam, she replayed the highlights of the game in her head. She thought of how they could have done things differently. She thought of how they could work to improve next practice. That was why Coach Marnie had chosen Kelsie as team captain. She was very passionate but positive about everything she did. She did her best to put a smile on her teammate’s faces and a little extra effort into their performances.

It was so quiet when she got out of the shower. She lived for the roar and rush of the game but sometimes a little quiet was good too. She felt safe there because this locker room was like a second home to her. She grabbed a towel and started to dry as she walked through the locker room. Kelsie loved to take her time after a game. The light rail would come around when she was ready. It was also Friday so homework for Monday was not exactly pressing. For the moment, she had all the time in the world.

“Kelsie Gutierrez!” A voice called out and Kelsie yelped and dropped her towel. he bent down to retrieve it, but she looked around wildly.

“Not funny!” Kelsie yelled. “You can’t do that to a girl in a towel!” She huffed and looked around for which friend had played such a dirty trick. When she came around a group of lockers, a thing that was not a cat was sitting on a bench. Kelsie froze in confusion.

“Sorry for scaring you, Kelsie,” The thing said. “We have need of your positive spirit and unbreakable nerve.”

Kelsie nearly dropped her towel again. “W-what!? How can you be talking? What are you talking about? Aren’t you a little short for a college recruiter?”

“I am recruiting you to save the world,” the thing said. “We need you.”

“Who is we? Who are you?” Kelsie asked.

“I will explain at the meeting,” the thing said. “Bring this charm to the location on the note.” Then the thing dropped a charm and a note and ran out of the locker room, leaving Kelsie with more questions. She grabbed up the charm which turned from blue to purple.”

Media Update 6/1/2017

Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

After finally watching Pirates 4 (see below) the night before, I went off to meet my friends at an IMAX matinee. I was excited for the movie in the same way that I get excited for Fast and the Furious Movies. I love the familiar characters and the impossible antics and this movie showed promise of being that again. Like some reviews have said, the movie is a little long. However, I only noticed that after the movie and I was surprised that two and a half hours had passed. I never looked at my watch once during the movie. It was pretty much a nonstop adventure full of comedy and some poignant emotional moments. Depp, Geoffrey Rush and a lot of character actors return to do what they do best. We also get a new couple for Jack to assist in breaking yet another curse. They were great, played by Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario who were both totally new to me. We also got a great villain in Javier Bardem who is making a good living playing great villains. If this was the last Pirates film, it was a fitting send-off as it felt like it called back to the first one while looking forward. I definitely recommend it.

Treasure Planet

This was one of the Disney animated movies that I missed because I was off at college and I just fell off from watching Disney movies. I had already read Treasure Island so I am sure that this one would not have interested me so much. It has been probably about twenty years since I have read the book so the movie actually sounded a little attractive. I was right, I had forgotten enough of Treasure Island to be unsure of what was happening next and what parts were added in and what parts were from the book. This is an update, of course, putting the story in space in a setting where extraterrestrials freely mingle with human beings. The animation is really pretty as you would expect. What really got me was the art direction and the character design which felt a little fresh to me which is hard to do with aliens. As the movie went on, I started to remember the book but by then I did not care so much. The voice acting is fun, the animation is fluid and the plot is classic. None of this is surprising from the Writer/Director team of The Little Mermaid and Moana. The music is a little bit too much butt rock to me but it was fine. I recommend it.

Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides

So when I decided to go with my friends to Pirates 5, I knew I finally had to watch Pirates 4. This was something I had wanted to do despite hearing it was a bit of disappointment. My motivations to watch the movie were the same as above. Right away, the movie felt like the rest of the Pirates movies. There was Captain Jack and he was going to have an adventure. It did not take long for me to realize that this was not a normal Pirates movie. Most Pirates movies are about the other characters (for the majority Swann/Turner) doing stuff and Captain Jack trying to do stuff with or against them. This movie was more of a personal story for Jack. For once, he was the male romantic lead and it felt a little weird. Still, as much as I love Jack being a degenerate reprobate, the moments where he actually cares are powerful. I did feel it was a little weird to bring in Blackbeard as the villain but it worked. Penelope Cruz was a pretty strong character as well. It just felt like maybe this one rambled and meandered a bit too much. There were a lot of great moments but the movie lacked the emotional punch the other movies had for me. Still, I would recommend it if you are a completionist like me.
