The Irregulars

I am a sucker for both Sherlock Holmes content and period supernatural stuff. This show immediately looked attractive to me. The show follows a handful of homeless kids in Victorian England who get swept up into an epic supernatural mystery thanks to a brush with Holmes and Watson. The show is an ensemble show much like great shows like Leverage and the Librarians. The kids are all great. Thaddea Graham plays the tough young girl who is the de facto leader of the group. Her sister is played by Darci Shaw, a dreamy but excited young woman who is starting to push past her previous limitations. McKell David plays the eternally plucky and optimistic young boy of the group. Jojo Macari plays the group’s muscle with a chip on his shoulder. Harrison Osterfield plays the outsider of the group. There are plenty of great actors who play interesting characters related to the Holmes mythos or a fictional version of the Order of the Golden Dawn (an organization that Holmes author Arthur Conan Doyle was a part of). I am really invested in the characters and the mystery. I recommend this show.

A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting

This seemed like a fun little idea and this movie exceeded my expectations. The movie follows a rookie babysitter who gets sucked into a supernatural world just beneath the surface and a personal and potentially global crisis. Tamara Smart does a great job as the clever and relatable babysitter over her head. Oona Laurence is great as the more experience monster hunter who becomes the main character’s mentor. Tom Felton is a scene-stealer as the movie’s villain, a creepy but funny boogeyman. There is a lot of fun and offbeat humor and just enough action to keep things exciting. The movie tackles some creepy ideas but does it with enough humor to keep things light. It reminded me somewhat of the first Spy Kids movie. Apparently, this is based on a series of books so I look forward to the upcoming sequels. I recommend this movie.

The Lost Room

I was poking around looking for a show to watch and stumbled on this show on a list on IMDB and I was intrigued. The show follows a cop who gets involved in a strange underground supernatural where mysterious magical items are being sought by forces beyond his understanding. The show is built as a mini-series in three parts with each part being movie-length. I have only watched part one. The star is Peter Krause, a very charismatic and funny guy who also has the chops for drama. His daughter is played by Elle Fanning and she is cute beyond words. Character actors Peter Jacobson, Kevin Pollak, Roger Bart, and more play great parts in the first section and I can see that there are even more actors in future parts. The mystery is fascinating and I like the world that is forming beyond the normal world. I recommend this show.
