Charlie’s Angels (2019)

I was not really young enough to watch the show but I enjoyed the nineties reboot pretty well. This movie is a full-on reboot done with purpose. The concept of the movie is that the Charles Donovan Agency has now gone global and there are numerous cells of Angel agents all over the place. Each cell is paired with its own Bosley which is now a rank and not so much a name. I really loved this movie from the first few minutes until the end. Part of that really had to do with bringing in Kristen Stewart. I was definitely one of the people who bagged on her in her Twilight and Huntsman days but I now realize that she is great if she is allowed to show some charisma. She was an absolute delight and, as one of the more comic voices of the main trio, she really helped keep things light and fun. I was really pleased to see Naomi Scott as one of the leads because she is really knocking it out of the park lately and in this, she was basically the comic relief while still being a great dramatic character. Ella Balinska plays the heavy of the group and she is great with the deadpan humor. They are joined by Patrick Stewart and Elizabeth Banks (who also directed). I would actually liken this movie to the Mission Impossible film franchise with a slightly lighter tone. It also does not try to sweep the franchise’s history away and instead builds on what they can. It also has a banger soundtrack. I definitely recommend it and I hope that it gets a sequel.

Mystery Incorporated

I watched a heck of a lot of Scooby-Doo reruns when I was a kid and I have definitely been caught up in waves of the franchise’s nostalgia over and over. I watched so many adaptations over the years. I even enjoyed the hell out of the Scooby-Doo live-action movies. I had watched a little bit of this show when it first came out but I got distracted and never continued. The show is somewhat famous for actually giving the regular cast more character arcs and allow them to be a little closer to people rather than cartoons. There is also an overarching mystery that connects the episodes of each season. Some of it feels like Sherlock Holmes and some of it feels a bit Lovecraftian. The art style is a little darker and sharper as well. I love that the cast still is very much like old incarnations but with additional soul. All of this makes each episode less interchangeable and on top of that, the villains feel less iconic but more memorable. I recommend the show and it makes me want to consume more Scooby stuff.

6 Underground

I have become a huge fan of Ryan Reynolds in the past few years so I knew that I would eventually catch this one. The movie follows Ryan Reynolds as the bankroll and leader of a secret squad that eliminates dictators and evil people in power. The movie is very pretty with great sweeping shots and great cinematography. Ryan Reynolds is glib and funny as usual and often the best part of the movie. The problem was that I was just not feeling this one. It has exciting action scenes, fun characters, and a neat idea. However, I feel like it lost me in the editing and some of the writing. From the beginning, there were long scenes that went too long, too many cuts, and the plot meanders a bit. I actually don’t recommend the movie.
