Terminator: Dark Fate

They have tried many soft reboots for the Terminator franchise to varying degrees of success. To be fair, I loved the first two movies and liked the third. Salvation was just too dark for me and I have yet to see Genisys. This movie followed the same formula as Halloween (2019) and just created a sequel to T2. It actually makes more sense because of time travel. Now that Skynet has been thwarted, a new threat arises. Natalia Reyes is great as the normal person character caught up in the madness but finding her power throughout. Her arc is so satisfying and believable. Mackenzie Davis plays her dedicated protector with toughness but a lot of good depth. Linda Hamilton returns as Sarah Connor and she is so good. She combines her toughness from T2 with a new sassy broad energy that I loved. The Terminator himself returns and I enjoyed his offbeat comedy and the character surprised me by being really touching. Gabriel Luna makes for a really creepy villain and I love the new design for Terminators. The story brought something new to the franchise while still feeling like it was part of the chain of the franchise. It also feels good to not be ping-ponging back and forth between Skynet being a threat and being defeated. I recommend this movie.

Robocop 3

This seems to be a month where I realize that I have not seen the third movie in a franchise. I love the goofy sentimentality of the Robocop franchise. Each movie explores what it is to be human and the dystopian future that our cities are surely becoming. For those who do not know, the Robocop franchise explores a world where a corporation is able to literally purchase Detroit’s police force. Along the way, there is almost comical cartoon violence with plenty of gunfire. Robert John Burke takes over the role of Robocop and does a great job emoting as a robotic character. Remy Ryan plays his new child sidekick and it actually works. She’s precocious but in a way that’s fun and not annoying. Jill Hennesy plays the tech the wizard who helps Robocop enter a new phase in his development. They are joined by a whole group of fun character actors led by CCH Pounder. They are opposed by fun villains Rip Torn, Mako, Bruce Locke, Bradley Whitford, and John Castle. I recommend this movie too.

I have been a fan of Vin Diesel since the release of XXX. He is a surprisingly good actor and he tends to pick interesting projects. This movie is a comic book adaptation about a hero who uses nanites to instantly heal massive damage and have other superhuman powers. It is definitely an interesting look at creating superpower people through the mix of technology and biology. It would fit in well with Upgrade (2018) but apparently, it is the start of a new shared universe. Vin Diesel is great as the driven former military man who has been infused with nanites. Eiza González plays a complicated heroine. Guy Pearce is very convincing as an Elon Musk-type douchebag CEO. Lamorne Morris plays the comic relief scientist, he is a very bright spot in an otherwise somewhat dark movie. The movie plays with reality and memory. The action scenes are really good although a lot of them are not for the faint of heart due to the gore and the implied gore. I recommend this movie.
