The Return of the Living Dead (1985)

This had been on my radar for ages with some saying it was not good and some adoring it. As soon as the movie started, I knew it was definitely compatible with my vibe. The movie sets itself up as sort of a sequel to the original Night of the Living Dead (sort of). The movie is a cross between Punk Rock and Airplane! and it is so much quirky fun. The movie gets started quick and just does not let up until the credits roll. The cast is full of quirky misfit character actors who work so well together while being recognizable and rounded characters in their own right. The leader of the cast is Clu Gulager who definitely helps to drive he movie along. The movie bounces back and forth from comedy and horror so well that I felt so much whiplash in the best way. The zombies in this are the most interesting zombies I have seen in a good long time. The visuals and sound of the zombies made them extremely terrifying and they might just win the prize for scariest zombies in cinema. Perhaps tied with Braindead/Dead Alive. I definitely recommend this movie.

Zombieland (2009)

I have had this on my list since it came out and it has since been on so many lists of recommended movies. The movie ended up even better than I thought it would be. The movie follows an anxiety-ridden loner in the zombie apocalypse who finds a weird found family. All of the characters are given names based on US cities. Jesse Eisenberg plays Columbus, a young man who has survived through his anxieties forcing him to create a set of survival rules. Woody Harrelson plays the rough and tough Tallahassee. Emma Stone plays the highly intelligent Wichita. Abigail Breslin plays the precocious Little Rock. They are pretty much the only characters in the movie other than the mindless zombies. The movie is about the four characters figuring out what to do in the apocalypse and coming together. It is a funny and interesting take on the genre and was way more thoughtful and heartfelt than I thought it would be. I recommend this movie.

Night of the Comet (1984)

A classic 80s zombie movie, this is an interesting and dark film. Two teen sisters find themselves adrift in the zombie apocalypse where the majority of people are just dead and the rest are undead. Catherine Mary Stewart plays level-headed, tough girl Reggie. Kelli Maroney plays her ditzy and fun-loving sister. Robert Beltran plays young traveler Hector who is humorously not the toughest character. The movie has few characters but there are some somewhat intelligent zombies who are fun but also unnerving. As with most zombie movies, it may be the humans who are the real monsters. It is a fun bouncy horror movie with a lot of action and also some really dark moments. I recommend this movie as well.
